Outdoor saunas: the complete guide
An outdoor sauna is the one people picture: cedar, steam, snow on the roof, a plunge or a cold hose outside the door. Here's everything about buying one in the US, from the styles and what they cost to the pad, the wiring and the wood.
Styles
| Style | Price | Seats | Notes | Brands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barrel | $4,000-$9,000 | 2-6 | Cheapest real outdoor sauna; fast heat-up; curved walls mean headroom only at the center | Almost Heaven, Redwood Outdoors, Sweat Kingdom, Dundalk |
| Cube / pod | $5,000-$12,000 | 2-6 | Modern look, full headroom, better insulation, often a glass front | Redwood Outdoors, Sweat Kingdom, SaunaLife |
| Cabin with changing room | $8,000-$20,000 | 4-8 | A porch or anteroom; the most comfortable; needs the most space | Dundalk, Almost Heaven, custom builders |
| Outdoor infrared | $7,000-$16,000 | 2-5 | Infrared heat in a weather-rated shell; 240V; no steam | Sun Home Luminar, Peak, Clearlight Outdoor, Sunlighten |
| Wood-fired tent | $1,500-$2,500 | 2-6 | Portable, hottest per dollar, canvas lasts years not decades | SweatTent, North Shore |
What your yard needs
- A level base. Gravel pad, concrete, pavers or a deck rated for the weight (barrels are 1,000-2,000 lb dry). $300-$2,000.
- Power or firewood. Electric heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit run outdoors in conduit, $800-$1,500. Wood-fired needs a safe stove clearance and somewhere to keep dry wood. Electrical details.
- Drainage. Water from steam and cleaning drains through floor gaps; don't put it in a low spot.
- Clearance from the house and fence. Codes vary; 3-5 feet from property lines and 10 feet from structures is common for wood-fired. Check your city.
- A permit, sometimes. The electrical always; the structure if over your city's footprint threshold (often 100-200 sq ft).
- A path to the door. Pavers or a deck so you're not walking through mud between rounds.
Heater: the part that's often not included
Many barrel and cube kits are priced without the heater. Electric heaters from Harvia, HUUM and Saaku run $700-$2,000 and must be sized to the room volume (6 kW for about 250-320 cubic feet, 8 kW for 320-425, 9 kW for 425-530; go up a size for lots of glass or cold climates). Wood stoves for barrels run $800-$2,500. Heater sizing.
Wood and weather
Western red cedar and thermowood are the two that last outside. Expect to oil or stain the exterior every year or two, re-tighten barrel bands as the wood settles, and keep the roof clear. Hemlock and spruce exteriors need much more upkeep. Wood guide; maintenance schedule.
Winter
Outdoor saunas work in any US climate; that's the point. In January a barrel takes longer to heat (45-60 minutes), an insulated cube less, and the walk through the snow is the feature. Smart heater controls (Harvia Xenio, HUUM UKU) let you start it from the house so it's ready when you are.
Adding cold
Outdoor is where the sauna-and-plunge pairing lives. A stock tank, a barrel plunge or a chiller tub next to the sauna door. How to run the circuit; best plunge tubs.
