Best barrel saunas of 2026
The barrel is the most popular outdoor sauna shape in America for good reasons: it's efficient to heat, quick to build and relatively cheap. Here are the barrels that independent testers and owners rate highest, and how to choose between them.

Why barrels work
Hot air rises and collects at the top of a room; in a barrel there's less wasted space up there, so the heater warms the air you actually sit in. Barrels heat faster and need a smaller heater than a cube of the same capacity. The round shape also sheds rain and snow.
What you give up
Bench width and headroom. The curved walls mean you can't sit upright against the wall at the ends of the bench, and tall people may touch the ceiling when standing. Treat the stated capacity as a maximum, not a comfortable number: a "4-person" barrel is lovely for two.
Choosing
- Value: Almost Heaven Pinnacle. Heater included, American-made, and Harvia (which owns Almost Heaven) makes the heater, so there's one company to call.
- Longest warranty: SaunaLife, with limited lifetime coverage, though you buy the heater separately.
- Wood-fired: Dundalk CT Harmony with the Harvia M3 stove, or order most cedar barrels with a wood stove option.
- Big groups: Sisu Edwin seats eight and has proven itself under commercial use.
- Supporting a small US maker: Sweat Kingdom in Idaho.
Assembly and setup
Most barrels go together in 4-8 hours with two people: cradle, floor staves, walls, bands, ends, benches. You need a level base and, for electric models, a 240V circuit. Wood-fired barrels need a chimney kit and clearance from anything flammable. Budget $300-$1,500 for the electrician or $500-$1,000 for a chimney kit.
Maintenance
Re-tighten the steel bands after the first few weeks as the wood settles. Oil or stain the exterior every year or two. Leave the door open after sessions so it dries out. Cedar lasts decades with this little care; thermowood needs the same but marks more easily.
