Our picks
- Best known: Plunge, a mature product with wide support, at a premium price.
- Cheapest way in: Ice Barrel. Start with the barrel and ice, and add a chiller later if you stick with it.
- Best sauna pairing: Sun Home, if you're buying their sauna too.
What to look for
- Chiller strength: how cold it gets and how fast. Weak chillers struggle in hot climates or in direct sun.
- Filtration and sanitation: a filter plus ozone or UV keeps the water clean for weeks. Without them, you're changing water constantly.
- Power: most run on a standard 120V outlet; put it on a GFCI-protected circuit near water.
- Indoor or outdoor: outdoor units need insulation and a cover.
- Size: taller people should check inside length and depth.
What the evidence says
A 2025 review of 11 studies (about 3,200 people) in PLOS One found cold water immersion reduced stress for around 12 hours and may improve sleep, but found little support for claims about immunity or mood. The American Heart Association warns that the "cold shock" in the first minute spikes breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
Safety
- Never plunge alone, and enter slowly rather than jumping in.
- Start with 30-60 seconds at a moderate temperature.
- Talk to your doctor first if you have a heart condition or take beta blockers.
