Barrel, cube or cabin?

The heater-not-included trap

Several of the best-regarded brands (SaunaLife, Dundalk, Harvia kits) sell the room and the heater separately. A Harvia or HUUM electric heater adds $1,200-$3,000; a wood stove with chimney kit is similar. Almost Heaven and Redwood Outdoors include the heater in the sticker price, which makes their numbers look closer to the others than they first appear. Always compare the all-in price.

Electric or wood-fired?

Electric (Harvia and HUUM are the two names to look for) means a 240V circuit run outside by an electrician, typically $300-$1,500, and then a sauna that's ready in 30-45 minutes at the push of a button. Wood-fired needs no power, gets hotter, and gives you the ritual of a fire, at the cost of tending it and storing firewood. Dundalk's CT Harmony and most barrels can be ordered either way.

Wood

Western red cedar is the classic: rot-resistant, aromatic, expensive. Eastern white cedar (Dundalk) is similar and lighter in colour. Thermowood, heat-treated spruce or pine used by SaunaLife and Redwood Outdoors, is stable and cheaper, though testers note it's softer than cedar and can split at the edges. Whatever you buy, plan to oil or stain the exterior every year or two unless it's aluminum (Sun Home) or you like silver-grey weathering.

Where to buy

Almost Heaven, Redwood Outdoors, Sun Home, Plunge and Sisu sell direct. SaunaLife, Dundalk and Harvia kits are sold through authorized retailers such as Topture. Compare on our rankings, and read the traditional sauna guide for heaters and wood in more depth.
