What to know about the prices above
- Heater included? Infrared outdoor cabins (Sun Home Luminar, Peak, Clearlight Outdoor, Sunlighten) include everything. Many traditional barrel and cube kits list the room price; the electric heater is $700-$2,000 on top. Redwood Outdoors and Sweat Kingdom bundle the heater on most models; always check the "what's included" tab.
- Wiring. Electric heaters need a 240V circuit run outdoors, typically $800-$1,500. Wood-fired needs none. Details.
- Base. A level gravel pad, patio or deck, $300-$2,000 depending on what you have.
- Delivery. Curbside freight on one or two pallets, 1,000-2,000 lb for a barrel. Assembly is a day with two people. What to expect.
- Wood. Cedar and thermowood last outdoors; hemlock doesn't. Wood guide.
Outdoor saunas sold through retailers
- Almost Heaven (American-made cedar barrels, via Costco and direct) is the biggest name here and usually ranks first on Google for this search. Good product; Costco's return policy is a bonus. We don't score it because it has no direct affiliate program.
- Dundalk LeisureCraft and SaunaLife through Topture; Sisu through Rogue and Titan; Finnleo through local dealers.
Our picks
By situation, with the reasoning: best outdoor saunas and best barrel saunas. Deciding whether outdoor is right at all: indoor vs outdoor.
Sauna for sale near me: where to see one in person
Most saunas are bought online and delivered by freight, but if you want to sit in one first, these are the places that exist in most of the US:
- Sunlighten showrooms. The only premium infrared brand with its own showrooms, in a few dozen metro areas. Check Sunlighten for the locator.
- Costco. Sells Almost Heaven cedar barrels and Golden Designs (Dynamic) infrared cabins, online and sometimes on the floor in larger warehouses. Costco's return policy is the most generous you'll find on a sauna.
- Home Depot, Lowe's, Sam's Club. Budget infrared cabins (Dynamic, Maxxus, SunRay) online with store pickup; rarely displayed in store.
- Hot tub and pool dealers. Many carry Finnleo, Finlandia, Helo or Harvia traditional saunas and a line of infrared. Search "hot tub dealer" plus your city; call and ask what sauna brands they display.
- Sauna builders. In the upper Midwest, Pacific Northwest and New England, local companies build custom traditional saunas and often have a demo unit.
- Gyms, spas and bathhouses. The cheapest way to feel traditional heat before buying. A $30 day pass answers "do I like this?" better than any showroom.
Once you've decided, prices are almost always lower buying direct from the brand online; see online vs in person.
