Portable saunas: blankets, pods, steam tents and wood-fired tents compared
"Portable sauna" covers four different products at four price points. Here's what each one actually is, who it suits, and the ones worth buying.
The four kinds
| Type | Price | Heat | How it works | Storage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sauna blanket | $350-$700 | 140-170°F surface, far infrared | Lie inside, head out, 30-45 min | Closet | Cheapest; solo; a sweat, not a room |
| Infrared pod / tent | $600-$2,300 | 130-170°F, far infrared or full spectrum | Sit on a stool, head out, 20-40 min | Folds flat | Hotter than blankets; some have loud fans |
| Steam tent | $400-$700 | 110-120°F, 100% humidity | Sit inside a zip tent fed by a steam generator | Folds flat | Feels like a steam room; not dry heat |
| Wood-fired tent | $1,500-$2,500 | 180-220°F, steam from stones | A real sauna in a canvas tent with a stove | Packs into a car | The only portable with true Finnish heat; outdoors only |

Picking one
- Apartment, want it to disappear: a blanket. HigherDOSE is the best-made; MiHIGH is the budget version. Blankets explained.
- Want to sit up and get properly hot indoors: Relax Sauna's pod (170°F, fast) or Therasage's Thera360 (full spectrum, red light, folds). Both $1,400-$2,300.
- Like steam rooms: SaunaBox's SmartSteam, $399.
- Have a yard and want the real thing cheaply: SweatTent or North Shore. Tents explained.
- Travel with it: blankets and steam tents fit a suitcase; pods fit a trunk; wood-fired tents fit an SUV.
What you give up versus a cabin
Room to move, the ability to share it, longevity (blankets and tents last years, cabins decades), and, for the infrared options, the ambiance that makes people actually use a sauna daily. The flip side is price, zero installation and no commitment. A lot of people start with a portable and buy a cabin a year later, which is a fine path; see best saunas under $2,000 for how the portable options compare with the cheapest cabins.
Using a portable sauna well
Hydrate, start at the middle setting, build time before heat, and clean the fabric regularly (blankets and tents hold sweat; most have wipeable linings, and a towel inside makes a big difference). Session guidance is the same as any sauna: how long and how hot.
