Sauna delivery and assembly: shipping times, freight, and how much building you'll do

Yes, you'll assemble it. How much work that is ranges from "ten minutes with no tools" to "a weekend with a friend and a drill." Here's what to expect from order to first sweat.

How long shipping takes

Brands quote a lead time on the product page; believe it, and add a week. Freight carriers deliver Monday to Friday during business hours and call a day or two ahead to book a window. Someone needs to be home.

What "curbside delivery" means

The default for anything on a pallet. The truck has a liftgate; the driver lowers the pallet to the ground at the curb or the end of your driveway, and that's where their job ends. A two-person infrared cabin is 350-500 lb on one pallet, in 4-6 boxes you can carry one at a time with a helper. A barrel sauna is 1,000-2,000 lb across two pallets with 7-foot staves. Plan for it:

Infrared cabins

These are designed for two people and a video. The floor goes down, walls clip to it and each other with buckles or cam locks, the roof drops on, the bench slides in, and the heater cables plug into the control box. The fiddly bits are aligning the glass door and routing the wires. Most owners report 1-2 hours. Then it plugs in (120V) or your electrician connects it (240V).

Barrel saunas

The most involved common kit. You assemble the cradles, stand the staves around the end walls one at a time (this is where the second person matters), tension the steel bands, and fit the door and benches. The heater is installed per its own manual and wired by an electrician. First-timers take a full day. Kits from Almost Heaven, Redwood Outdoors and Sweat Kingdom include good instructions; watch the video before the pallet arrives.

Wood-fired tents

Fast. The tent pitches like a camping tent; the stove and chimney click together; you add stones and build a fire. Leave 20-30 minutes for the first burn-off of factory coatings on the stove, outdoors, before using it.

Before the truck comes

  1. Measure the path

Door widths, hallway turns, stairs. The biggest infrared panel is about 6 x 4 feet.

  2. Prepare the site

Indoors: clear the floor, confirm ceiling height. Outdoors: a level pad or deck, finished before delivery.

  3. Book the electrician

For 240V, have the circuit run before the sauna arrives so you're not staring at it for two weeks. What to tell them.

  4. Line up a helper

For the unloading day and the build day, which may not be the same day.

  5. Keep the packaging

Until you've used it a few times. Returns need it, and some return policies require it.

Can you pay someone to assemble it?

Yes. Some brands offer assembly as an add-on ($300-$1,000 depending on type and location). Otherwise TaskRabbit and handyman services assemble infrared cabins for $150-$400, and barrel kits for $500-$1,200. For precut traditional rooms, a carpenter or a sauna builder is the right call.
